Acoustic vs Electric

Acoustic

Acoustic Guitars are practical. Unlike electric guitars, they do not need to be plugged into an amplifier. They can however be amplified if you purchase an Acoustic-Electric Guitar, which is what I suggest. Later on you can buy an appropriate amplifier for your Acoustic-Electric if needed.

Things to consider when purchasing an Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

  • Warranty: this is an electronic instrument, faulty electronics are common
  • Color, Design, Aesthetics: I suggest neutral colors, nothing flashy, or anything you will grow out of. Trust me, many students are disappointed with their instruments after one year because of this.
  • Quality: buy a good guitar that will last you through college. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.

Electric

When playing in school jazz bands or rock bands, an Electric Guitar is necessary to be heard. You will need to purchase a suitable amplifier.

Things to consider when purchasing an Electric Guitar:

  • Warranty: this is an electronic instrument, faulty electronics are common
  • Weight: if it’s uncomfortably heavy, don’t buy it; you will be sorry later.
